Download - Free software : Download Photo Labels Angel (759 KB) (completely FREE)

The definition of your Photo Albums in Picasa is valuable.
Labels-Angel looks at your Picasa albums definition and reports when pictures are missing.

==== Description ====

1) What is Google Picasa ?

Picasa is a software download from Google that helps you organize, edit, and share your photos.

See http://picasa.google.com/

2) What are Labels (Albums) ?

Labels (Albums) are used to group and organise pictures based on your own criteria and identified by a simple word or title. For example, you can create a label called “Flowers” to group all your pictures of flowers, or you might create a label like “Trip to the seaside” to arrange all your latest holiday snaps.

See http://picasa.google.com/ to learn more.

3) What is the problem or risk regarding photo albums ?

There have been important issues in the past due to the way Picasa manages the list of pictures in the albums. Details are give below (bottom of page). Picasa was, in many frequent/common situations, removing pictures/photos from the album, thus spoiling hours of work.
In this context, I decided to write a quick and free software to monitor the list of pictures in albums, to record them and to notify the user in case of changes or removal of pictures.
The important and most common issues are now solved with Picasa 3.9. Thanks to Picasa team for those enhancements !
However, due to past issues, I prefer to continue using the monitoring, recording and notification features of my free software to make sure that album definition are safe.
Thus, the software has been updated to support the new Picasa 3.9 feature, more precisely its ability to store album definition in "picasa.ini" hidden files.

4) Purpose of the software: watch the list of pictures in albums, record changes and notify the user if picture/photo is removed

Labels-Angel is a small Free software which looks at your Picasa album definition and records the list of pictures/photos per album.
Whenever pictures are added or removed, it keeps track of those changes.
When pictures are missing or removed, Labels-Angel will warn the user. The warning message(s) remains displayed and user can see the list of missing photos. See explanation below for more details.

What should be done in case of missing pictures/photos ?

There are 2 situations:

First situation: you really intended to delete/remove the album. In that case, you can just write a small sentence within "Labels Angel", in the column "deletion comment". When there is any comment ; "Labels Angel" will stop warning you, it will consider that the deletion has been "confirmed" by the user.

Second situation: you didn't want to delete/remove the album. In this case, you want to restore the album in Picasa. Labels Angel will not do this automatically. You need to do it with Picasa. This operation is probably a nightmare for non-technical audience, especially before Picasa 3.9.

One way to restore album is to re-create it manually... This is the easiest if only a few pictures are missing.
The other option is to use the "PAL files" from Picasa (for versions before 3.9) or to use the "INI" files. There are many tips and tricks to make this work properly, and there are also traps... so I prefer to not give to much details here. The best is to search in the Picasa help forum and ask for help if necessary. It's tricky, but it can be quite efficient and it can work sucessfully to restore thousands of pictures in albums.
Most important, in all cases, you need to understand what happened and how/why the pictures have been removed from the Album(s). This will help you avoid similar issues in the future. Good luck.

Should Picasa integrate a similar feature in its next version(s) ?

My personnal opinion:
Yes and no. Yes, Picasa should clearly have a better management of the pictures in next version. Picasa really needs some reliable way to deal with moving or renaming files and folders, or with cases when the folder is sometimes unaccessible. Remark 28/1/2012: this was my comment before 2011 and Picasa 3.9 has clearly improved that part. It's much better now, album definitions are stored in folders. Thanks Picasa team !
Indeed, over the years, such problems always happen once in a while.
However, Picasa does not really need to use a system similar to Labels-Angel. Labels-Angel is only a workaround for the Picasa problem. The real solution, within Picasa, would be to keep the reference to missing files and never delete that reference automatically. Only the user should be allowed to manually remove some pictures from the album. If the picture is not found, an empty thumbnail should be displayed instead, along with a warning message. But the reference should never be removed directly. (Remark 28/1/2012: I think this still needs to be done)

Change Log

Jan 28th, 2012 : Update tool to be compatible with new Picasa 3.9 features. Note that Picasa 3.9 solves critical issues, but tool is still useful to secure the list of pictures in albums.
Nov 5th, 2010 : new tool to automatically match a photo+album pair when it was moved to another directory. New usability enhancements (CTRL+V or DEL of comments on large selection).
March 10th, 2010 : new windows installer, update of the web page
Jan 11th, 2009 : start minimized, default shows lost label instead of "all"
Jan 7st, 2009 : Version 1.0, first public version :
PAD File

Why was the problem a critical issue before Picasa 3.9 ?

Before Picasa 3.9, there were many very common or very frequent situations where Picasa would remove pictures/photos from the albums. For example:
  • if your pictures/photos were stored on a network drive. If Picasa is started, just once, while the drive is disconnected, all pictures would be removed from the albums !
  • if you move a picture folder from one place of your disk to another... the labels are lost! Even if you put everything back to its original place...
  • if you have photos stored on USB drive. Sometimes the USB is not plugged or sometimes the drive letter may changes. Ooops, all albums would be lost ! Even if you put the USB drive back to normal

The worst thing is: when Picasa loses your photo Labels/Albums, it does not warn the user in any way.
So now, you work for hours organizing your photo albums and yet Picasa can totally or partially remove some pictures without any warning or any kind of notification.
Please note that we are talking about losing the list of pictures from the album. We are not losing the pictures, which remain safely on your disk. The point is: you will have to re-organize your photo albums again, and it can take hours.
With Picasa 3.9, these issues are solved because the information about albums is stored directly within the picture folders. Thus, when the USB disk or network drive is disconnected, the albums are empty, but Albums are restored automatically when pictures/folders are available again.
